And particularly when I don't say the thing I wanted to say but didn't formulate until much later, when I was somewhat less horrified. Here I log the ballsy things I hope I have the guts to spit out if the time should come again!

So I've been accepting rides from an older gentleman who I work with, which already starts to sound sketchy, but bare with me here. We've been having freezing temps here lately, snowstorms and such and I live about a 15 minute walk away from my work, which can be a hell of a walk on a bad day. So when my co-worker offers me a ride, I accept.

Strike 1
It started out as a conversation about how I visited my relatives in Canada and how there's a large Hong Kong community in Markham, Canada.
Mr. Smith: Well they're taking over.
Moi: I wouldn't say that exactly.
The ballsy me: Shoot! Give those immigrants and inch and they take a mile! or Did you forget who you were talking to?

same conversation gets better....

Strike 2
Mr. Smith: The librarian at our school, she's really smart. She's from Hong Kong. She went through the British school system.
Moi: Uh-huh.
The ballsy me: Civilize those savages damn straight! Thank god for imperialism!

On another afternoon with Mr. Smith

Strike 3
Mr. Smith: You speak such good English.
The lame me: Well I've lived here all my life.
The ballsy me: You sound surprised.

2% avocado? It's a bit pasty, or sort of has a grayish tint to it? Let's get one thing straight ladies and gents: Guacamole = avocado (preferably a Haas) gently mashed. If it doesn't have chunks of avocado in it, then it really can't be called guacamole. You can throw in some (and why wouldn't you?) fresh lime juice, cilantro, maybe some red onion, definetely salt, and pepper, and I like mine with some diced tomato (seeds and juice removed), but really the star of the dish is the avocado. Corn starch? soy bean oil? green food coloring? That's just preposterous! I'm sure most home cooks aren't adding the aforementioned extremes, well I should hope not, but seriously if you mix in (and you can call me a food snob) but if you're using anything to make it "smooth" like sour cream or plain yogurt or mayo -- uggh! then you're degrading the integrity of avocado!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://szenga.blogspot.com/2006/12/no-avocado-audacity.html' title='2% avocado? I'm absolutely stoked about that. I'm just preparing myself for the transition all over again and experiencing some withdrawal symptoms I suppose.

I am bound to travel coast to coast for a while. There was a whole family of seals out in the ocean swimming about fifty feet away from where we stood. We didn't miss the hermit crabs! I was worried the tide would be an impossible 3 feet by the time we finally arrived, but it wasn't too bad. Next time, we're definetely wearing rubber boots!

Lunch at the Ferry Building Farmer's Market: We shopped first. Sampled and brought home treats, like lavender salt, heirloom tomatoes, caper hummus, and just ripe nectarines. Then dined at Taylor's - I went fancy pants and ordered the Ahi burger, oh and a white pistachio shake. It was worth every penny!

Sunday: Craft Fair at Fort Mason with gals Wendy and Aiko: Aiko's auntie had a booth displaying her origami. Jewelry at JanosikNY looked and felt divine. I especially loved the hearts collection; she makes tactile pieces using leather and foam rubber. Ooh and there was this really nifty drawing hand by Agelio Batle, made of graphite. (The pieces don't stain your hands.) Though just the idea and the experience of writing with a hand was a bit freaky, as was using a foot, double ended finger and nose, but I made some fantabulous (can I use that Z?) doodles using the lily.

Speaking of appendages, everything at the fair cost about an arm and a leg making it a purely window shopping event, but it left me inspired to get more crafty. Then I could charge and arm and a leg off of other people . . . er I mean create beautiful things.

Evening: San Mateo for a carborific dinner + 1 ginseng carrot soup at Joyluck Place and spent oodles of time at Suruki Super and Ichiban-kan. Had wacky fun browsing everything from Naive wash, to Hakodate ramen, to oil splatter guard - great invention for keeping the stove area clean.

And now back to the rat race!

Dear Traveling Fairy:

I would like to go to Casablanca and Marrakech. Thoroughly enjoyed Gothamist's post on the "Ichiban in the Oven" which led me to Metrodaddy is Mad and to Seinfeld's The Parking Space episode. Hilarious!

Had a delectable peach, which I sliced and mixed in with some European style plain yogurt and Sweet Meadow honey from New Zealand. I love yogurt and honey. Independently they're great, but together, they're just a match made in heaven. Here's a dessert I learned from Tyler Florence's cookbook. Heat up a pat of butter on a skillet. Add your favorite honey, and some fresh sliced figs (I'm sure fig compote would be yum-o too.) Cook until the fruit starts breaking down and carmelizing, and the honey thins a bit, and gets kind of bubbly. (If you have the time, toast up some almonds or walnuts.) Once everything is nice and hot, serve it over Greek style plain yogurt and enjoy!

All this at my cube. It takes a lot of work to look busy!

And all along I thought I was such a foodie.

Turns out I'm just a debonair diner.

On y va!

<img style="FLOAT: right; Well Zigzagger and I jetted off to Tokyo (our first time to Japan!) for my dear friend's wedding, trekked around the Kansai region, then made our way to HK and then back to SF. Then to NY. Then I alone came back to SF. I'm bi-coastal like that. Can you handle it?!

Below is an abitrary list of highlights from the past month(s) that I love to revisit in my daydreams:

Tsukiji Market
Vending machine restaurant
Ran and Masaharu's wedding
CHEF SAKAI!
Shopping at Takashimaya's basement near closing
Takoyaki and fried rice
Gourmet Japanese dinner w/Sugimori family
Kyoto temples - drinking local spring water
Shinkansen and geisha
NARA deer and 6th grade friends (thanks for the reminder A!)
LOFT and MUJI!
Raw meat sushi
Uncles'/Auntie's zen pad
HK Disneyland
Fantasyland Cantonese tourguide
Journal-envy
McDonald's Fan-tastic!
DADA- MoMa
Tapas and Veneiro's with Jessica and Tom
Mercadito's Tacos (see previous post!)
Klimt's Five Paintings from the Ferdinand and Adele Bloch-Bauer Collection

The Saigon of Marguerite Duras

Alex found this on Maud Newton's blog (which has nifty posts about writing). Part deux.

This past weekend my absolute "favorite" person was my mail carrier. S/he has successfully misdelivered packages/envelopes/etc. addressed to moi to all the wrong places, and no not just to someone down the hall but to people in buildings down the street. Maybe it's not s/he but the little troll making a muck of things in the USPS truck (oh UPS you're next.)

Also on notice: the supervisor at my local post office. I was told Friday or Saturday (at the latest) I would be contacted re the whereabouts of my missing package. Monday the tool calls me and says, "mistakes happen, but they rarely happen around here." That afternoon I get two pieces of mail that don't belong to me, and it's no surprise it's someone's bank statement who of course doesn't live in my building. Day later, turns out they have my package, but they didn't realize this till four days of me and Alex hounding them to the point where I'd just about given up. Apparently, the person who went down to the post office to get MY package didn' t realize it wasn't addressed to him/her until after opening it. To top it off, a post card addressed to my place was delivered up the street to an aquaintence's residence yesterday. She doesn't even live in an apartment building but a townhouse. The only thing we have in common is our zip code.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://szenga.blogspot.com/2006/02/misanthrope-thats-me-part-deux.html' title='Misanthrope -- that's me. (Wishing you your heart's fulfillment)
Bo Bo Go Sing! (May every step be higher and higher)

Today we went NYC's Chinatown to yum cha and see the lion dance. About the former, we tried getting into Golden Bridge, and it was near impossible. We didn't even bother asking how long the wait would be, seeing as how one could not even get through the front door! Hordes of people trampled up the steps to what was already a packed lobby. It was a fire hazard to say the least, and even though I attempted the trek up, and made Alex too, despite his misgivings, I came back down, finally resigning myself to no dim sum today. Too crazy! No matter, we had a delicious Malaysian lunch at Penang (I know, I would've gone to Nyona, but being that Penang was closer was sort of the deal breaker, oh and growling stomach and heavy rain.) Penang was not as crazy but also very busy from the New Year crowd. I guess I should have known, what with all of Chinatown en fete. The waiters/waitresses all wore red silk/brocade jackets and the place was beautifully ornamented with firecrackers and banners galore. So alas we had Roti Canai, Kang Kung Watercress, Hainese Chicken, and Asam Laksa -- mm, I'm getting hungry again.

About the latter, I think I expected a parade, but it was more like various troupes went store front to store front (mom reminds me to not romanticize: the lion dancers are just collecting red pockets.) Perhaps this method was to my picture taking advantage because just as I was leaving this shop a lion came right up to me (no I am not uploading that one)! Even though my parade was slightly rained on, (some of the lions even had plastic head wraps to keep the water out) literally and ever so slightly figuratively, it was altogether, if not just for that singular moment, when I could see the eyes of the lion, pretty darn cool.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://szenga.blogspot.com/2006/01/sun-neen-fai-lok-happy-new-year.html' title='Sun Neen Fai Lok! Funny how that works. So I'm trying to get my place into shape (it's cluttered, not filthy, but then again that's what I've been telling myself for the past couple weeks, and it's been a while since this place has really been "cleaned"), get a haircut, pay all debts (finances permitting), take care of some dying plants, and hopefully make room for some new ones. Oh the joy of a new year. I really have no complaints about 2005 (lunar or solar) going but of course it's nice to start anew. So I wholeheartedly welcome the year of the dog. Bring on the new star alignments! Only thing was, one of our friendly neighbors, a parent accompanying his kids, said "So this is what you guys do instead of work" like we had way too much time on our hands decorating and dressing up for Halloween. We felt a bit embarrassed but then reveled in it, spending a total of three hours carving our Haunted House pumpkin (all credit goes to Alex)(btw, lola still can't believe we chose the same pattern!) and blew off the rest of the night noshing on sweets and watching a fairly good episode of Laguna Beach and watching the movie Bewitched, which was very funny.

Misanthrope -- that's me.

This was our week of concerts. We foresaw burnout and general disgust by the end of it, and we were right. We had fun, in the beginning, I even learned of two new bands (Cut Copy and Matt Pond PA), that I really like, but last night was just painful. Ever heard of Stars of Montreal? They opened for Death Cab, and it was as if we were watching an SNL skit, where the bandmembers are old, mismatched, and terrible sounding, and to top it off ironically dramatic, only this band, was doing it for real. It was most delightful chillin' with friends and by chillin' I mean picking pumpkins, drinking cider, getting lost/ trudging through the corn maze, even getting chased by llamas, particularly the one named Trish. Yes loads of fun. (We almost went to a Civil War reenactment, but it was "rained out" so maybe next time.) This weekend however is looking a bit dismal. Though maybe (crossing my fingers) it will get better come the latter part of it, sorta like last week when our sink was clogged and our super pulled out "the monster" (aka. 60 years worth of hair) and spent two days wrestling with it in our bathroom. This week it's the bedroom window leaking. I swear I'd like to give the people above us a piece of my mind! Last year rain came through their ac unit and leaked into our wall and this year it's the same thing. Arggh. Maybe when the sun comes out again (come on sun, come out and play and don't stay away till May) things will be better ;/

On the subject of avocadoes . . .

Alex says it's not the avocado's fault but the knife's, I guess the problem was really just me. Ours happens to be special. For the past year, we've had our gripes about how it's not pedestrian friendly. It has no sidewalk or even a shoulder, in fact the shoulder is used for parking, so your choice is to walk the fine strip of road between the parked cars and traffic or to cross back and forth (which we'd have to do twice) and watch the traffic, because people drive like lunatics. Speaking of loonies, a crazy middle aged guy used to approach Alex and then just talk to him about his mother, but I digress.

In addition to non-pedestrian friendliness, our side of the street is just plain ghetto. Of course I don't mean that ghetto. Thing is, there's trash and a lot of it, always lying around. It's just all out there, from baby's diapers, to chicken scraps, to ironing boards. So there are always ungodly things lying around on that side of the street, and thus I make a big deal to avoid it.

Lo and behold, tonight as Alex and I are walking home, we get to the sidewalk part, when this young woman, from the opposite side, begins screaming and waving a serrated kitchen knife at a car. My mind suddenly flips to episodes of "Cheaters."

Yada yada yada -- I'm completely engrossed. And just as I'm witnessing all this before my eyes, I walk right onto some crap. The day I let down my guard and and what do you know? Lesson? Keep walking, call the police, don't rubberneck, and especially don't forget to mind the road! There's crap everywhere!

Constant Gardener

I saw Constant Gardener last night. They're so yummy and good for you. Imagine sushi without them. Well then you'd have authentic Japanese sushi, but I'm from California (in case everyone doesn't already know, so yeah.) I really like them on salad pizza or on the side of an omelette. I also really like them with chips and salsa, duh. I can eat them all on their own too, or with a bit of salt. Though, I don't know if I'd have them with a malt. But I can eat them on a boat or sitting next to a goat. Ok I really must stop now -- I'm having too much fun!

So long summer

Summer days are nearing an end. Actually, they're near done. I'm not sad. No I won't miss the humidity. I have to admit it's glorious weather in Westchester, NY -- somewhat like the kind of weather I'm used to and I'm lovin' it (no I'm not referring to a McDonald's meal, although I've still got a weak spot for fries and or a soft serve ice cream). What I've realized is that because it feels like summer's leaving, I don't want it to go, and especially when it just started to get nice. I guess I can't say I'm really in denial about the changing of seasons (in fact I'm egging winter on!) when I went on a shopping spree at Century 21 for winter gear: 2 pairs of long johns, (yes I'm aware that I'm about the only 24 year old girl in the state of NY who will admit to wearing them)(will anyone confirm whether it's only Californians who migrate here that do wear them, fearing the cold?), gloves, and a scarf! Darn, back at home, I can't get away with wearing a hat and not feel like a poser. Well I must embrace the only constant: the inconstancy of everything. In other words, suck it up.
